Ngorongoro Crater
The world's largest intact volcanic caldera with incredible wildlife density
About Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa's most extraordinary natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This massive volcanic caldera, formed over two million years ago when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed, spans approximately 260 square kilometers and creates a unique self-contained ecosystem that supports an incredible year-round concentration of wildlife.
The crater floor sits at 1,800 meters above sea level and is home to over 25,000 large animals, including one of Africa's densest populations of predators and the critically endangered black rhinoceros. The diverse habitats within the crater - from grasslands and swamps to acacia forests and Lake Magadi, a shallow soda lake - provide ideal conditions for an astonishing variety of species including lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards, and cheetahs.
What makes Ngorongoro truly special is its natural enclosure created by the 600-meter high crater walls. This unique geography allows predators and prey to coexist in remarkable density, offering visitors the exceptional opportunity to see the Big Five in a single game drive. The nearby Olduvai Gorge, known as the "Cradle of Mankind," adds significant archaeological importance with some of the earliest evidence of human evolution. Whether you're a wildlife enthusiast, photographer, or cultural explorer, Ngorongoro Crater offers an unforgettable safari experience unlike anywhere else in Africa.
